History.
Sing Sing Correctional Facility was built in the year 1825 in the city of present day Ossining. The city of Ossining, New York was originally named Sing Sing. The city changed their name with the hope of avoiding connection with the correctional facility. Sing Sing was named after the Native American phrase “Sint Sinks”. The Native American phrase means, “stone upon stone,” it is thought that the city was named that because of the large rocks that run along the Hudson River. No matter the name change the city of Ossining will always be known for Sing Sing Correctional Facility.
